In honor of Bloomsday, I flipped through my copy of Ulysses (seen above on my shelf, right next to the indispensable annotation) to see if my college notes in the margins and elaborate underlining system would trigger any fond memories.
Turns out I had, in a sense, used a sort of hashtag system … I had some marginal notes that I would re-use over and over to point out certain “trends” in the text. My favorite of these is “women’s cattiness,” which I used a ton. Also: “drinking.”
But then there’s one page with no marginal notes at all except this one:
“God, I love this writing.”
